PV MED: Italy leads the development of Solar electricity in Mediterranean Area
PV Med Conference shows that the feed-in tariff system is the best support for the photovoltaic development.
Catania, Italy, 6 October 2005 - PV Med, the first photovoltaic Mediterranean Conference has proved that once more the feed-in tariff is the best support system for the development of Photovoltaic technology. Italy is being the witness of this success. In a press release of today, Scajola, Italian ministry for industry has confirmed this major achievement: “It is the enthusiastic result of our intention to bet on PV technology, this is the first step of Berlusconi’s government strategy to diversify our production of energy, to introduce green energy and , in the long term, the reduction of the energetic bill for our families” There has been so far 3500 request of Feed-in tariff financed projects, for a total of 61.9 MW for plant less than 50 kWp and 33,3 MW of for plant over 50 kWp. In few days Italy will multiply by 10 the quantity of current PV applications.
Italy has been the center of attention during these two days however successful experiences of PV programs in Southern and eastern Mediterranean countries have shown that solar electricity can answer specific energy needs in these countries. The conference was the occasion to present technologies and solutions, express needs for the Mediterranean market to use past successful experiences and avoid repeating past mistakes.
Results of the conference
The Alliance for Rural Electrification was launched on the occasion of the conference; its objective is to provide renewable energy solutions for sustainable development by providing clean electricity in remote areas.
A Mediterranean Platform for RES development to be created , in Sicily with the support of Italian Ministry for the environment and animated by an EPIA - GIFI consortium.
Very high participation from all over Mediterranean
The Conference won a very high success with over 350 participants from more than 28 countries all around the Mediterranean countries (Northern and Southern) and Europe. Next conference, 2nd PV MED will take place in a southern or eastern Mediterranean country in June 2006 with the support of the Italian Ministry for the Environment, the ADEME, EPIA and the local government.
